How To Delete AutoComplete Entries In Microsoft Outlook

Other than just email management, Microsoft Outlook has many other convenient features like Spellcheck, Category Options, AutoComplete etc. that make your Outlook tasks easy. Here, in this section, we will discuss about the AutoComplete feature and ways to delete AutoComplete entries.
AutoComplete is a feature which displays suggestions for names and e-mail addresses as you begin to type them. These suggestions are possible matches from a list of names and e-mail addresses that you have typed before, known as the AutoComplete name list.
In Microsoft Outlook, the AutoComplete entries are stored in a file with an .NK2 extension. The location of this file depends on your Operating System. If you are using Windows XP, you can find the Outlook AutoComplete file at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. The file will be named the same as the default Outlook profile. If it is Windows Vista/7, the AutoComplete file will be located at C:\Users\User Profile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook.
The following Outlook Tech Support guidelines will help you delete AutoComplete entries.

Instructions for deleting all AutoComplete entries
  • Close Microsoft Outlook if it is open.
  • Now navigate to the location where the Outlook AutoComplete entries are stored. Go to the above mentioned location, depending on the type of operating system you have on your computer.
  • The folder might be hidden, depending on your system file settings. To view the files and folders, go to the Tools menu, and click on Folder Options. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. Then click the OK button.
  • Locate the Outlook.NK2 file and delete it. Make sure that you delete the file ending in NK2 only. If you find other files with the name Outlook, you should leave them as they are.
Instructions for deleting specific AutoComplete entry
  • Open Microsoft Outlook and click on the Mail section located at the left hand Navigation Pane.
  • Now you need to open a new email by clicking the New button located at the top of the screen just below the list of menu options.
  • Enter the email address you want to remove from AutoComplete. You can find the email address displayed below the line of text you are typing.
  • Use the down arrow key to select the entry you want to remove and press the Delete key on your keyboard. This will remove the entry from AutoComplete.
